It just works: not!

It just works: not!

I don't know about you but in recent years, I've been finding it harder and harder to fight the detractors from the Windows camp. For years, Windows and Microsoft fan boys have beaten me over the head with their superior, or imagined superiority over OS X. 'Apple is doomed, you can't play games on a Mac, you get viruses just like us, you'... Etc etc.
Over the years, each one of their smarmy comments have been shot down by Apple's ack ack guns as one by one, they have been shown to work on Mac's.
Games are now being released, ok maybe not the most recent ones but released they are, such as Tomb Raider, Call of Duty, Batman Arkham City etc etc, are now available to play on a Mac. More and more applications which were only available on the dark side, can now be found for OS X and iOS.
But this is where the gains begin to run out and the negatives begin to mount up. With each successive release of iOS and OS X, we run into problems. Apple release iOS and OS X updates which result in iPhones becoming expensive bricks and OS X applications becoming useless pieces of code. This results in bad press and infuriated Apple users who now find they can't use their expensive devices until they either roll back to a previous version of iOS or OS X or await Apple fixing the problem with a further update.
So, where does my frustration come from? Well, with the latest updates I have been left with apps that wouldn't open due to some certificate being out of date. Whether this is due to Apple or the developers, or even both, screwing up does not matter to me as either way, it just doesn't work and that makes me very unhappy!
More and more people are being affected by problems which simply shouldn't happen, and it's not just with software either. Macbook displays that have peeling anti-glare, logic boards going south etc etc all add up to the bad press that Apple is now getting, whether warranted or not.
So why is this happening? Is Apple now so successful that they can't keep up on the quality control? Are they unable to find the programmers needed to keep the applications working? I don't know but when they decide to release 'beta' software for the general public to use in anger you have to wonder if that is the case. Surely, Apple should be able to get things right before they release it for the public to use? I would have hoped they would but recent experiences have me wondering about what is going on at Apple.
The latest problem I have suffered is from out of date certificates. This has resulted in me having to delete software as it would not open up because the certificate was not recognised, a messages then tells me to download a newer version of the application even though I had the latest version on my MacBook, and then all the data for this software is lost from the deleted application because iCloud failed to back it up: Argh!
So, I now feel that it just does not work instead of it just works, and that is just not good enough. We've become too reliant on Apple's software and devices working anytime, all the time, but now that isn't the case.
Maybe its because we expect the latest and greatest from Apple to become available faster and faster and Apple tries to comply, but maybe it's time for them to say, no, we will only release something when we know it's ready: not only ready but fit for purpose too.
That's why I feel Apple needs to take stock and slow down to ensure it all: just works.
