Whatever Happened To Google Glass?

Whatever Happened To Google Glass?

This week rumours are abound that even though the project is in the prototype phase Google Glass will be releasing a version 2 in 2015. There are also strong hints that the device will be powered by an Intel chip in favour of the already incumbent Texas Instruments. This may have been done to reduce costs but many think that it’s to improve poor battery life of the current model.

Anyway, that got me thinking. What’s happened to Google Glass anyway? Did it crash before it even took off? Recently we've spent a lot of time concentrating on what tech would be best for our wrists rather than our faces. And even though it may be the wearable that started the trend was Google Glass just a little too ahead of it’s time or just a bad execution of a pretty decent idea?

In recent weeks it’s looked as though the project was in crisis with major app developers such as Twitter giving up on the platform. Reuters reports that out of 16 Glass app makers it recently spoke to a large majority had postponed or canned development for the device.

Even Sergey Brin (the original ‘Glasshole’) recently and famously left it in the car (probably not good timing).

Add onto this the fact that a number of key players in the project including Babak Parviz, the architect behind the original concept have left Google for pastures new.

So what do you think about Google Glass? I thought that it might have been something that I would have been interested in using but as the concept became a reality I became less and less convinced. I did even get the chance to see it in action at the BTN Bash this summer and even though the quick demo I saw looked rather fancy I couldn’t think of a practical use for it in my day to day life. Plus that fact that you may be ridiculed for wearing one I decided to steer well clear.

Also there are the concerns about privacy. A lot of people are nervous of ‘Glassholes’ and never know if their being recorded or not which has lead to a lot of high profile stories about establishments such as cinemas and bars banning the use the Glass completely.

I do admit that I would still be interested in seeing what the next version brings but it would have a bring a hell of a lot more to the table than its baby brother. And that price point need to come way down too.

I’d be interested to hear what you think about Glass. Was it a success or a failure or have we just not waited long enough. While I wait let me just check my watch.
